This mug commemorates Peterloo. In 1819 a crowd of 70,000 gathered peacefully in St Peter's Field Manchester to demand political reform. At the request of magistrates they were charged by cavalry; 15 lost their lives and up to 700 were injured. The infamous massacre became known as Peterloo (recalling the Battle of Waterloo) and eventually led to fairer suffrage. This design is based on a cartoon by Cruickshank.
