Map of the Australian Colonies 1854
This map of the Australian Colonies & New Zealand was published in 1854 by Gall & Inglis of Edinburgh. Just under 80 years since the First Fleet little was known of the Australian interior. The colonies shown are New South Wales, Van Dieman's Land or Tasmania, South Australia, Australia Felix or Victoria and New Zealand. Australia Felix meant fortunate or happy Australia, so named by Thomas Mitchell.
The Folding Map Company produce reproductions of the rarer maps, all dissected and hand laid onto 100% natural cotton cloth. All of them are supplied in handmade slipcases covered in marbled paper taken from our collection of original papers dating back to circa 1700.
