2018 Art For London Underground Calendar
From its early days as a means of moving goods from town to town, the British railway system steadily expanded, with routes reaching close to the heart of London by the middle of the nineteenth century. Concerns about traffic congestion led to the creation of the London Underground, which today carries close to four million passenger journeys per day.
Early in the twentieth century, the Underground commissioned artists and designers to create posters for its many destinations, both within London and beyond the city—historical sites, gardens, neighborhoods, the zoo, and more. Soon the Underground was established as an important patron of the arts and an acknowledged leader in the field of poster publicity. The twelve colorful images in this calendar are from the London Transport Museum, which houses one of the finest poster archives in the world.
