Commander Crabb : What Really Happened ?
There is nothing more certain to give rise to damaging speculation then to impose a 100-year embargo on disclosure of the truth.
Early in the morning of 19th April 1956, Commander Lionel Buster Crabb, war hero and diver with over 10 years experience dived into Portsmouth Harbour to investigate the hull of a visiting Russian cruiser for MI6.
He did not return.
The sensitive nature of the dive, which took place against the express directions of the prime minister Sir Anthony Eden, resulted in a bungled official cover-up.
The subsequent clamp down on information set in motion a snow ball of conspiracy theories which can only be more damaging to the government and its intelligence agencies than the truth itself.
So what really happened ?
